Vandana Shiva

Alternative Nobel Prize for her fight to change farming parctices and paradigms; physicist, philosopher and writer

Vandana Shiva is one of the most renowned personalities in the ecofeminist movement. In 1993, she received the Right Livelihood Award, known as the Alternative Nobel Prize, for her fight to change agricultural and food practices and paradigms in today’s world.

Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence principle, she founded Navdanya, an organisation from which she supports farmers in advocating local crops, combatting globalisation, promoting organic agriculture, maintaining biodiversity and fostering women’s commitment to the ecological movement. In her book, Earth Democracy, she proposes this concept of earth democracy as an alternative to capitalism.
